When the stress of everyday life gets to be too much, nothing relieves the pressure like a soothing visit to the spa. If your spa trips are few and far between, you certainly want to make the most of it. Fortunately, there are tried and true methods of taking a load off and leaving your cares behind. Here are six ways for you to unwind during a highly-sought-after visit to the spa.

1. Eat a Light Meal

Depending on what time you schedule your spa visit, you may want a bite to eat before you go. Try eating at least an hour before you leave and keep it small especially if you plan on having a massage. The last thing you want is to feel full or have a tense body because you ate a heavy, gassy meal. Likewise, avoid caffeine before your appointment so you’re not jittery. The same applies after your visit, when light treats are the best.

2. Tune Into Your Senses

A visit to the spa is a treat for your senses, so be sure to tune into all of them. You’ll enjoy luxuriously scented oils and candles and receive an invigorating massage and facial. You may also be able to listen to your favorite music and don’t forget about your tastebuds. Sip on a soothing herbal tea or if you’re attending a spa party or brunch, immerse yourself in the flavor of a mimosa or a cocktail containing vibrant Sorel Liqueur made from hibiscus and spices.

3. Disconnect Completely

The biggest favor you can do for yourself when staying at a spa is to disconnect completely from the rest of the world. Leave your cellphone at home or at the very least, make sure it’s turned off. The only device you should consider bringing is something to listen to music on if that’s how you like to relax. Remember, a spa day is the utmost in “you time”, so turning off electronics is a must.

4. Do Your Research Ahead of Time

If you’re a first-time spa-goer or you’re trying out a new one, do all the research you can before you arrive. Every spa has its own way of doing things so try to get up to speed before your appointment. Once you become a regular, you’ll have it down pat. Before then, make sure you book the services and treatments you want ahead of time and arrive early on a spa day. If it’s your very first time, start small until you get familiar with all the services offered.

5. Communicate Your Needs

When you arrive at the spa, you’ll be asked to fill out forms to let your massage therapist and other staff know if you have any health concerns. This should be a brief medical history and a list of medications. Be sure to let them know if you have any injuries, muscle problems, allergies or fragrance sensitivity. Also, don’t be afraid to communicate your needs even if it’s just to tell them it’s your first visit and you’re nervous. It’s better to speak up than to have an uncomfortable silence.

6. Prepare a Spa Bag

Before your spa day arrives, be sure to prepare a bag filled with everything you need. Depending on your spa’s amenities, you’ll want to pack a swimsuit, flip flops, hair tie, makeup, deodorant and assorted toiletries. Your spa will provide you with towels and a robe. Make sure you wear soft and comfortable clothing the day of your appointment. Think yoga pants, sweats, tees and anything that’s not restrictive. Unless your spa is located in a hotel where you’re staying or on a cruise ship, you should get a locker to store your things.

As your upcoming spa day gets closer, make sure you do your research so that you’ll enjoy every blissful moment. By disconnecting from the world and tuning your senses into the present moment, you’ll be able to truly unwind.
