August 8, 2022, Carlsbad, Cali. — The Southern California spa community came together to celebrate a pioneer in wellness on Thursday, June 30. The quarterly iconnection gathering included a luau honoring wellness legend Deborah Szekely and paid tribute to her 100th journey around the sun.

Industry professionals, esthetic students and wellness advocates honored Szekely who turned 100 on May 3.  During the event Skekely delivered keynote remarks and debuted her new book, “100 Lessons from a Grasshopper.”

While the event celebrated Szekely’s achievements as an activist, philanthropist and author, it also underscored the tremendous changes in wellness that have occurred since Szekely founded Rancho la Puerta in 1940. Joanne Berry, director of spa education at Bellus Academy said many advancements in the spa industry are interconnected to Szekely’s role in raising awareness of the expertise spa professionals bring to serving clients. “While new wellness therapies, treatments and technologies have advanced skincare, the effective use of these approaches are rooted in knowledgeable spa professionals attuned to each client’s situation and treatment objectives,” said Berry.

Bellus Academy was a sponsor at the event. Beauty Changes Lives, a non-profit founded by Bellus Academy owner Lynelle Lynch provided attendees with information on esthetic and spa scholarships. “The extraordinary achievements of Deborah Szekely throughout her life illuminate the unlimited opportunities for wellness professionals to change lives, communities and the world around us,” said Lynch.
