People go to spas to relax and have fun. If they are being treated by an unprofessional employee, that can ruin the entire experience for them. Luckily, there are several easy things that spa owners can do to make sure that their spa is both professional and calming.

Have a Set Uniform

When employees all have the same (or similar) uniforms, there is more uniformity between coworkers. The uniforms should both be comfortable and look nice. At a spa, it’s not likely that the employees will be comfortable wearing a suit, but female employees wearing women scrub sets or male employees wearing short-sleeved button shirts can fit the bill. If possible, employers should encourage workers to wear the same color or range of colors. This will make them look all the more professional.

While not technically part of a uniform, employees should also make sure their personal hygiene is in check. Employees should shower or bathe every day and make sure their hair looks nice. In a spa setting, it’s usually best for women to have their hair pulled back and men should make sure their beard is trimmed nicely.

Keep Everything Clean

Employees aren’t the only ones who need to be clean for professionality’s sake. The spa itself should be meticulously kept clean. Customers will likely be sitting or lying in one spot for most of the duration of their visit. If that area of the spa is dirty, then they are likely to have a bad experience.

Surfaces should be cleaned whenever a client is done using a piece of equipment, such as a table for a massage. The client may leave behind dead skin or hair that can dirty the seat and make it look less-than-welcoming for the next person to sit down.

Create a Separate Break Area

While it’s a good thing for clients to see that your employees like each other and can have a good time at work, it’s not necessarily a good thing for clients to see employees lounging around or eating their lunch. The best way to resolve this issue before it starts is to create a  break area for your employees that is totally separate to the work area.

Having this area in a room that clients cannot see into will work the best. The further away from the spa area the room is, the better. This will keep clients from hearing the employees who are on their break, which will help both groups to relax more.

Reward Employees

Employees work hard to be professional, so why not reward them for it? This will help the employees to feel more appreciated, which will encourage them to keep up the good work. Rewards don’t necessarily need to come in the form of money. Buying lunch for your employees or throwing a staff party is a great way to improve employee morale.

Rewarding good behavior will do much more to encourage employees to be professional than nagging them about unprofessionalism. Avoiding nagging will also help to show employees that you trust them. When employees feel trusted, they are more likely to take care of work duties on their own. This will make employees more productive. What could be more professional than that?

Relaxing and professionalism don’t have to be mutually exclusive concepts. When done correctly, employees can act professionally while still helping clients feel as relaxed as possible. When done perfectly, even the employees should be able to feel calm at work while still sticking to professional codes and rules. When an employer rewards this good behavior, things will go more smoothly for everyone involved.
